A wonderful family holiday at Bear Lodge

We had a wonderful first stay at Bear Lodge for half term. Having previously stayed nearby at CLUB 2140, we were familiar with how VIP Ski operate and were looking forward to our children meeting others their age in ski lessons and at Bear Cubs, with the hope that they would go to lessons happy and settled. Given that both girls went to Pyjama Club every night to be with their newly-made friends, couldn’t wait to get out on their skis each morning and each said multiple times that they didn’t want to come home, I can safely say that it was a success! The nannies were wonderful - our key person, Isabelle, was instrumental in helping the girls feel comfortable and attended to and was brilliant at keeping in touch with me and my husband, sending messages with photos and updates. We very much enjoyed the food on offer, however there were some very minor issues with service at times, with staff on one occasion not being present at all in the dining room and on another occasion I think we may have been forgotten. I’m also aware that it was difficult at the beginning of the week, when the first day saw the resort closed and therefore more pressure on the staff in the hotel. It was a little frustrating that we were advised that lunch would be provided, however the soup ran out 10-15 minutes into service and we hadn’t made alternative plans. I appreciate that lunch isn’t usually put on for guests, but to state that it would be on this occasion, there should have been more provision. Not a huge deal by any means, but something that could be thought about a little more for the future. I only mention these things to suggest a little tightening in this area, to reflect the high standard seen in all other aspects. I certainly appreciated the friendliness of the whole staff, who seemed to be happy to work in the hotel and cater to the guests’ needs and mostly were engaging and interested in how we were enjoying our stay. Having the concierge so easily accessible on WhatsApp was a great touch and took a lot of the thought process out of our daily scheduling. They were quick to respond to any queries we had and very helpful in making lunch bookings at local restaurants. The hotel facilities were excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our amazing stay! We can’t thank you all enough for making this our best and favourite ski holiday and maybe even best family holiday ever. We hope to be back next year!

We had a fantastic time, the hotel is perfect location on the piste right next to two of the main chair lifts. ESF and Intersport in house makes it very easy and convenient with children. Also an easy walk into 1950 which has some nice restaurants. The hotel is clean and in good condition. It has a good pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna. Staff were all very friendly, food was as you expect for this style holiday nothing fancy but what’s needed. Also super helpful they move all the luggage off the coaches and in and out of your rooms. Pillows are poor and mattresses is very hard. If you are in a room with bunks it is a little tight for space.

Ski in ski out and ski school drop off was very convenient. Lots of water machines was very handy. The wall in the swimming pool was excellent for throwing a ball against. Pool table and football table both being gratis much appreciated.

Good stay

Wonderful holiday - would have given it 4 stars were it not for: 1. Plates, bowls and cutlery at breakfast and dinner were consistently dirty. Some just stained which is fine but many were not clean (noticed at almost every meal). 2. Concierge was sometimes a bit confused (eg they asked us to return our skis and boots to the intersport store in town so we carried everything there ourselves only to be told by intersport that they don’t accept returns at the store and we should have left everything in the locker at bear lodge to be collected the next day). Had 3-4 examples where the concierge either didn’t know what to do or gave the wrong information. 3. Would have been nice to have clean glasses in the room at least every couple days (we used the same dirty glasses for the week and washed them with water) 4. Towels in the bathroom smelled a bit. 5. The wine wasn’t great. Wasn’t as advertised on the website. 6. The gym needs bigger dumbbells (had 5 kg max which isn’t enough for most people). 7. Sauna temperature was consistently too low (65-70). But staff and main host were super friendly and made up for the above. Overall enjoyed our stay and looking forward to coming back to Les Arcs.

The location is excellent, although noisy when the piste bashers work very late at night. The staff were excellent. Friendly, happy to engage in conversation and to offer help on any problems with the rooms etc. The shower in room 312 leaked badly, towels were provided to dam the flow, but were not the complete answer. The food was pretty average at the start of the week but improved by midweek. It wasn't the standard of food expected from VIP. The wine selection was excellent, much improved from past stays in VIP chalets. The separation between the dining room and bar was puzzling. Overall a good location, a good standard of accommodation, excellent staff and satisfactory food.
