Clearly we think we're great, why come to work otherwise. But what do our customers say? We know that web sites are littered with anonymous out of date testimonials that it’s difficult to trust, but we're displaying comments written by our current and recent guests live, here on our web site. We're laying it bare, warts and all, and with the name of the writer attached. It’s not easy to look at yourself objectively, so don’t listen to us, listen to our guests.

  • Great hotel but below par food and service

We stayed in Bear Lodge the week it opened, liked it then and I still think it’s a great place to stay. Perhaps the only accommodation quibble being no hanging space in the rooms. Otherwise it works like a dream. Sadly this time though, the service levels fell short of what we’ve come to expect from VIP. The food varied from OK to genuinely terrible (the burger and a very overcooked chicken supreme) and took ages to come. There were odd things like slices of unpeeled kiwi at breakfast. Sometimes tea was well stocked, other days it ran out quickly and wasn’t replenished. Personally I would like a savoury option for the bread - marmite, peanut butter, cheese - something other than jam. The staff were mostly very sweet and friendly but young and inexperienced. They were constantly apologising, whether they needed to or not, and just not very on the ball. For example they’d come to the table to ask if we needed more wine but leave without taking clearly finished plates. The worst examples were in the bar. Pre-dinner there should be two people on but there was only one and whoever it was they were slow and spent ages with their back to the bar, or chatting to one customer, while others were waiting to be served, so it took a long time to get a drink even if the bar was quite quiet. The Bar Manager in particular was inattentive and actually quite rude on occasion, hurrying people out of the bar and making it clear he wanted you gone so he could go out drinking. A shame because these small things can leave a bad taste and if this was someone’s first experience of VIP they might not choose to come back. Having Graham Bell there was great and made for a very sociable week but I’d suggest doing his presentation and prize giving earlier, as dinner took quite a while, meaning these things took place too late for a lot of people.

Second time of visiting Bear lodge and I was wasn’t disappointed. The staff bend over backwards to help you and always polite and courteous. Standard of accommodation is great and the food is always a high standard. Back again in March.

  • Altitude Lodge x8

    Chris Richards 22 Jan 2024

We first stayed at Altitude Lodge in March 2011 - a family trip with our seven month old granddaughter. She’s thirteen now, skis well, blacks sometimes, though not with us on this trip (at school). So eight times at Altitude Lodge…The staff are as friendly as ever and look after breakfast and supper and afternoon cake with brisk assurance. The quality of food has varied over the years. This time breakfast seemed a bit meagre. The cooked breakfasts are mostly very good but, in an exclusively adult week, why bother putting out CocoPops, Cornflakes and Weetabix everyday? There was a bag of very sweet granola(?) but nobody seemed to bother with that either. No unsweetened muesli, no good live yoghurt (just default Danone) and, if anyone might’ve wanted it, no oat milk. I suppose, in future, a strong request needs to be made in advance. The evening meals were mostly good, sometimes not. My own preference for vegetarian food was mostly well met, with one or two exceptions. I noticed that meat dishes were sometimes a bit undercooked, accompanied by minimal vegetables - but that was to some people’s taste, if not everyone’s. It used to be fun when Altitude Lodge was also a daytime restaurant - it was lively, full of French people speaking French, and the food was great. It feels a bit empty and sad now - until things pick up at the end of the day. Altitude Lodge used to provide an evening meal throughout the week but now, in common with many other chalets, there’s a night when it’s a matter of eating out or getting a takeaway. It’s a bit awkward because the lodge is way above the main town - you can’t just wander out and find somewhere to eat. Its location is perfect - ski in ski out - and that outweighs the disadvantages. So more than likely we’ll be back!

This was our first time at Bear Lodge. The facilities are excellent and we had a spacious comfortable room overlooking the piste. It is literally ski-in/ski-out. The food was good. The staff were first rate and always willing to help. Skiing with Graham Bell was great.

  • Great holiday as always with VIP

    Emily Banton 22 Jan 2024

As always the attention to detail was great. Location fab, facilities amazing. Our Nanny Jess was the best we have ever had. The staff can’t do enough to help. The only thing that needs to be looked at in this hotel is the food / kitchen. It was disorganised service at breakfast, we didn’t receive our hot drinks on more than one occasion and in the evening front of house were good (especially will) but the kitchen was slow. We also had two children with us out of school for the holiday so they were the only ones eating high tea. This meal was ok but felt like a bit of an afterthought. We received burgers 2 nights in a row and quite a few nights there was no veg with the meal. We visited the hotel on the week that Graham Bell was staying so each night there was the captains table where him and guests sat. It felt that alot of effort went into getting things right for that and maybe the rest of the guests dinning suffered at bit. Saying that the guided ski with Graham and Esf instructors was exceptional and we had the best time.

  • Fabulous !!

The chalet was very cleverly designed with a contemporary style. The living /dining area worked perfectly. The bedrooms were surprisingly spacious for ski accommodation. The bath robes were a lovely touch. The hot tub was very welcome. Our chalet host George was excellent. He cooked fabulous meals, offered lots of local advice and was very friendly. Only criticisms / observations : - the chalet is not ski in , ski out as advertised. - the bath towels are on the small side and could do with being larger. - the top floor bedroom could maybe do with having a curtain across the bedroom entrance to cut out noise and light from the window to downstairs.
