Whatever Happened to the 'Chalet Girl'?

For decades, the phrase 'chalet girl' has been synonymous with a winter season in the Alps. It conjures up images of fresh snow, roaring fires and twenty-somethings swapping office life for a few months in the mountains. It's a phrase that's appeared in books, newspapers and even films, becoming almost shorthand for working a ski season.

But here's the thing. Walk into a VIP SKI chalet today and there's every chance you'll be welcomed by a chalet host called Tom, Ben or Jack. The role has changed. Or perhaps more accurately, our perception of it hasn't quite caught up.

The term "chalet girl" dates back to the early days of catered ski holidays, when many seasonal hospitality roles were indeed filled by young women. The name stuck, and decades later it's still the phrase many people reach for when talking about ski jobs. Yet the reality is very different. Today's chalet hosts come from all sorts of backgrounds. Some have worked in restaurants, some have recently graduated, others are taking a career break or simply looking for a winter adventure before deciding what comes next.

Some are exceptional cooks. Others are brilliant organisers. Some are naturally outgoing, while others quietly excel at noticing the little details that make guests feel at home. The one thing they all have in common is enjoying looking after people.

Ask our returning guests what stands out most about their chalet host and it's rarely anything to do with whether they were male or female. It's the host who somehow knew everyone's coffee order by the second morning. The homemade afternoon cakes waiting after a day on the slopes. The way they'd catered for someone's dairy allergy from day one, without needing to be asked twice. The restaurant recommendation that became the highlight of the week. The birthday cake that appeared unexpectedly after dinner. Or simply the person who made everyone feel relaxed from the moment they arrived.

Great chalet hosts aren't remembered because of their gender. They're remembered because they made a holiday feel effortless.

One of the biggest misconceptions about working in a chalet is that it's somehow a role aimed primarily at women. It couldn't be further from the truth. Many of our most successful chalet hosts have been men, bringing exactly the same warmth, attention to detail and enthusiasm that guests value so highly.

A modern chalet host wears many hats. One minute you're preparing breakfast, the next you're baking afternoon tea, chatting with guests about the day's skiing, helping with equipment, recommending restaurants or ensuring dinner service runs smoothly. It's hospitality in its broadest sense, and those skills have nothing to do with gender.

One of the things our teams enjoy most is the people they work alongside. Living and working in the Alps creates friendships that often last long after the winter ends.
