A guide to a family ski holiday in La Plagne

If you’re considering La Plagne for your next family ski holiday, you’re not alone. For many families, it’s the resort they return to year after year, not because it shouts the loudest, but simply because it works.
It's this combination of accessibility, variety and genuine family focus that brings guests back year after year.
La Plagne sits high in the French Alps, forming one half of the vast Paradiski area alongside Les Arcs. But what matters more than the 425km of pistes is how manageable it feels when you’re travelling with children. The villages are purpose-built for skiing. The slopes are wide and confidence-boosting. And the infrastructure, from ski schools to childcare to lift access, has clearly been designed with families in mind.
Altitude plays its part too. With skiing up to 3,250m on the Bellecôte Glacier, La Plagne offers reassuringly reliable snow conditions throughout the season. When you’ve promised your children a ski holiday, snow certainty isn’t a luxury, it’s essential.
But what really sets La Plagne apart is its versatility. If you’re travelling with mixed abilities - a nervous first-timer, an improving teen and a parent who quietly fancies a red run before lunch - you don’t feel compromised. Around 70% of the runs are green or blue, meaning beginners can build confidence without fear, while more experienced skiers still have access to challenging terrain, high-altitude cruising and even off-piste for those who want it. And when enthusiasm dips (because it inevitably does at some point in the week), there’s far more here than just skiing. An Olympic bobsleigh track. Husky sledding. Heated outdoor pools. Ice skating. Proper mountain restaurants for long lunches. It's the kind of place where plan B is just as good as plan A.
Of course, where you stay shapes the experience just as much as the resort itself. Ski-in/ski-out access. Integrated childcare. Seamless ski school logistics. Sunday travel to avoid the Saturday traffic. These are the details that transform a good ski holiday into one that genuinely feels easy.
Here’s what you need to know about planning a family ski holiday in La Plagne and how to make the most of it.
La Plagne may not win awards for being the prettiest resort in the Alps but here's what it does brilliantly: it works for families.
Altitude matters enormously when you've promised children a week of unlimited snow. La Plagne's villages sit between 1,250m and 2,100m, with skiing reaching 3,250m on the Bellecôte Glacier. At these heights, snow cover is reliable and consistent throughout the season.
The pistes feel designed for building confidence. Wide, forgiving runs where nervous beginners aren't constantly worried about collisions. Around 70% are green or blue, yet experienced skiers aren't shortchanged - there's challenging terrain, glacier skiing, and off-piste for those wanting it.
Despite being part of the huge 425km Paradiski area, La Plagne feels manageable. You're not trying to "conquer" the entire ski area daily. You’re skiing comfortably within your chosen village and venturing further if everyone's game, but never feeling obliged to cover enormous distances.
The villages are purpose-built and unapologetically functional. Ski-in, ski-out is standard, not premium. Lifts are accessible. Ski schools are everywhere. And when you're managing children's gloves, boots, and enthusiasm levels, functional beats charming every time.
La Plagne's resort layout and villages.
If your children are beginners: Plagne Centre has dedicated learning areas right next to the main gondola. Magic carpet lifts, gentle slopes, and the 'Cool Ski Zone' with slower lifts designed specifically for first-timers. Crucially, these aren't remote - you can watch whilst still getting your own skiing in.
If you've got improving intermediates: Extensive blue and red cruising terrain across interconnected villages means variety without endless transit time. One day Champagny, another Montchavin-Les Coches, perhaps Les Arcs if everyone's keen. Snowboarders have boardercross tracks and snow parks to maintain interest.
If abilities are mixed: Confident skiers can access Belle Plagne and Bellecôte's steeper terrain and glacier whilst others stick to gentler runs, reconvening for lunch.
If you're travelling with confident teens: Enough challenging terrain, off-piste opportunities (with professionals), and snow parks to prevent boredom. Plus the reassurance they can venture independently in a well-marked, safe environment.

Here's what nobody tells you about ski school until you've experienced the chaos firsthand: February half-term, Christmas and New Year week lessons book out weeks in advance. Not "might book out" - will book out. Secure lessons when you book accommodation, not as an afterthought hoping spaces remain.
Group versus private lessons
For children, group lessons work brilliantly. They love learning alongside other kids, the social element keeps them engaged, and instructors are skilled at managing mixed-ability groups. For nervous adults who feel self-conscious or those wanting to perfect their technique, private lessons are worth the extra cost despite the expense.
Timing matters
Most group lessons run 9:00-12:00 or 14:00-17:00. This structure means families can ski together for half of the day, which can work well. Young children (under 7) typically respond better to half-day lessons. Their concentration wanes after a few hours and they can get tired quickly.
Don't feel obliged to book every day
Sometimes a rest day, or a day where the family just messes about on easy runs together without formal instruction, is exactly what's needed. Relentless structure can feel exhausting rather than enjoyable.
At Graciosa, we've partnered with Oxygène Ski School specifically to simplify logistics for our guests. English-speaking instructors, lessons beginning right outside the ski room (no complicated morning rendezvous points), and seamless integration with our Bear Cubs childcare if you've booked both. It removes coordination headaches.
Other reputable schools operate across La Plagne including ESF (the largest, with instructors throughout all villages), Evolution 2 and ESI Reflex.

Around day three or four, someone will announce they're "done with skiing." It happens - and the good news is La Plagne anticipates it.
Olympic bobsleigh track: The only public-access track in the French Alps. Genuinely thrilling - teenagers will talk about it for months. Options from family-friendly Bob Raft (€55pp) to professional driver experiences hitting 120km/h.
Husky dog sledding: Gliding behind enthusiastic huskies through Montchavin-Les Coches creates magical memories. You can relax as a passenger or try mushing yourself.
Deep Nature Spa: 1,500m² facility in Belle Plagne with heated outdoor pools, salt caves, saunas. Book a 2-hour session when someone needs proper rest-day recovery.
600m zip wire: Aime 2000 to Plagne Centre at speeds up to 90km/h with Mont Blanc views. €20pp, ages 6-99.
Ice skating: The outdoor rink in Plagne Centre provides an atmospheric evening activity a short walk from our chalets.
Long mountain lunches: Sometimes the best activity is simply lingering over lunch on a sun-drenched terrace whilst children play in the snow nearby.

Some families ski together all week. Others need childcare to make holidays work. Quality childcare transforms the entire holiday dynamic. Adults get to ski when they want to and children are engaged and entertained rather than dragged reluctantly onto slopes when they'd rather be doing something else. Everyone's happier.
At Graciosa, our Bear Cubs service provides qualified childcare (ages 4 months to 7 years) by professionals holding recognised credentials - not just "experience." Enhanced DBS checks, Paediatric First Aid, the works. Operating 9am-5pm daily (except Thursday, 1pm close), use it for an hour or all day, whatever your family needs.
The integration with ski school is what makes it seamless. Book childcare alongside lessons and our team coordinates everything: liaising with instructors, ensuring children have appropriate gear, managing collection after lessons.
Older children (ages 8+) participate in age-appropriate activities - junior quizzes, mocktail-making, films, resort activities like mini-golf - structured without feeling like they're being "minded."
The Monday morning welcome meeting provides reassurance. You'll meet the nannies, discuss the week, share routines. Immediately you'll feel confident your children are in capable hands, which means you can actually relax.
Important: Childcare spaces book quickly, especially during school holidays. Secure them when booking accommodation, not afterwards hoping availability remains.

Which airport is best for La Plagne? Whilst Chambéry is closer, we always recommend Geneva airport (approximately 3 hours transfer) as it’s far less weather-affected than Chambéry. Lyon, Grenoble and Chambéry are alternatives if Geneva doesn't suit.
Why Sunday travel? Saturdays mean traffic chaos accessing resorts. Sundays are significantly quieter, avoiding lengthy delays. We offer complimentary Sunday Geneva transfers for this reason.
Is it walkable with children? Plagne Centre is compact and largely pedestrianised. Our Graciosa chalets sit centrally with easy walking access to facilities. Walking between different villages (e.g., Plagne Centre to Belle Plagne) isn't practical - use free shuttle buses or ski between them.
Do we need a car? No. Free shuttle buses connect villages throughout the day and evening. Taxis available for door-to-door service if preferred.
How many days’ lift pass should we book? Most families book 6-day passes for Sunday-Sunday stays (you won't have time to ski on the Sunday afternoon upon arrival). Consider whether a mid-week rest day appeals - unused skiing days represent wasted money.
Is it actually snow-sure? Yes. Skiing reaches 3,250m on Bellecôte Glacier and La Plagne has an excellent snow-sure rating with many north-facing slopes and extensive snow-making facilities.

Resort choice matters. But honestly? Where you stay within that resort shapes the experience just as much.
Ski-in, ski-out at Graciosa means genuinely clicking in at the door and skiing onto the blue piste. Not "five-minute walk to lifts", actual door-to-slope access. The Grande Rochette gondola sits moments away. When you're managing children's equipment and enthusiasm levels, this convenience isn't luxury - it's a sanity-preserving necessity.
Sunday travel advantage: Whilst many operators use Saturdays, our Sunday-to-Sunday schedule avoids weekend resort-access chaos. Significantly quieter roads, shorter transfers, less stress arriving.
Hosted dining removes decision fatigue. Cooked breakfasts before skiing, afternoon tea when you return, children’s tea followed by three-course evening meals with wine on six nights. Our hosts remember how you take your coffee, warm your ski boots overnight, and anticipate needs before you voice them. After a day managing family dynamics on the mountain, not having to think about food makes such a difference.
Chalet suite flexibility: Our 16 Graciosa suites sleep 4-15 across various configurations. Whether you need compact accommodation for immediate family or larger space for multi-generational groups, options exist. Each thoughtfully equipped, each genuinely comfortable, each with that crucial ski-in, ski-out access.
Integrated childcare and ski school: Bear Cubs childcare coordinates seamlessly with Oxygène ski lessons. Pre-arranged lift passes waiting in your chalet. Restaurant bookings via our Concierge. We manage logistics enabling you to focus on family time rather than holiday administration.
Sometimes it's the details (warm boots waiting, passes ready, childcare coordinated, meals prepared) that transform a good ski holiday into one that genuinely feels stress-free and memorable for all the right reasons.
