Is Avoriaz good for beginners?
The car-free resort of Avoriaz is a great for beginners. There are 3 beginner areas located in Lindarets, Super Morzine and Plateau and 1 fun area called the Lil'Stash. Once you've mastered the basics, there are 27 easy/intermediate blue runs (covering about 40 km of terrain). To make the most of your first ski holiday, we would always recommend booking ski or snowboarding lessons from day one. Your instructor will take you to the ideal ski runs for your ability and build up your confidence during the week. Top tip: if you're a beginner skier, then the Avoriaz ski pass (rather than the Portes du Soleil full area ski pass) is all you'll need.

Should I book private or group lessons?
It depends on what you want to get out of your time on the slopes. Private lessons are tailored entirely to you. Your instructor focuses on your technique, your pace and your goals, which typically means faster progression. If you want to iron out a specific habit, tackle steeper terrain or simply prefer one-to-one attention, private is the way to go.
Group ski lessons offer something different. You're learning alongside other people at a similar level, which makes the whole experience more sociable and often less pressured. There's something reassuring about realising everyone else is falling over too. If you're learning with friends or family, a group lesson can also be a great shared experience that becomes part of the holiday itself.
For complete beginners, either works well. For intermediates looking to push on quickly, private lessons tend to deliver more in less time.
What's better: A half or full-day ski lesson?
Half-day lessons typically run for around two to three hours, usually in the morning or after lunch. They're ideal if you want focused, targeted coaching - working on your parallel turns for example, or getting comfortable on red runs. For experienced skiers who want to sharpen a specific part of their technique, a half day is often enough to make a noticeable difference while leaving the afternoon free to practise on your own.
Full-day lessons run for around five to six hours with a break for lunch. They're a better fit if you're returning to skiing after a long break, picking it up for the first time or simply want a more immersive day of structured learning. If you're an advanced skier looking to explore the extensive off-piste skiing that the Portes du Soleil has to offer for example, then a full-day ski lesson will give you plenty of time to go further afield with your instructor. Check out our Avoriaz Piste Map Guide.
For older children, full-day lessons also provide a reassuring routine and mean they're supervised and improving while you enjoy a few runs of your own. Younger children can get tired quickly and often prefer morning lessons followed by an afternoon of activities, playtime in the snow or quiet time back at the chalet. Our popular private ski nannies adapt to your family's pace rather than tying the whole family to a fixed timetable. They offer this service across all our chalets in Avoriaz, coordinating with ski schools, managing transitions and ensuring younger children have as much fun as possible during their holiday.
