Zermatt's History

The first document, in which Zermatt is mentioned, under its original name of Pratobornum, dates back to the year 1280. The name it bears today was first seen on maps dating from 1495. Zermatt purchased its freedom from the Bishop of Sion and formed its first real constitution on the 21st January 1691.

The mighty Matterhorn drew climbers to Zermatt and there were many unsuccessful summit attempts until on the 14th July 1865 Englishman Edward Whmper made the first ascent. Tragedy struck on the descent though when a rope broke and four of the seven climbers fell to their deaths.

Today there is still a fascination with the Matterhorn and it attracts mountaineers from all over the world. In more recent times it has also become one of the leading ski resorts in Europe if not the world. The car free streets of Zermatt hold onto a traditional charm and the sensitive planning has meant that the village is perhaps the prettiest in the Alps. Walking around the cobbled streets of the old town it is difficult not to be impressed by the glimpses of the Matterhorn between the roofs of old storage huts.
