One drawback to French ski holidays is the monstrous architecture of some of the purpose-built resorts, they may not be easy on the eye but they do provide amazing skiing. Not all of them should be tagged in this category, there are genuinely old mountain villages and indeed big bustling towns that you can visit and of course, French resorts are renowned for offering some simply fantastic skiing.
Your ski week is precious; you may book it months in advance, so you’ll want to be sure of the snow. Avoriaz is the ‘ski to and from the door’ purpose-built resort on the French side of the big Portes du Soleil ski area. Of the purpose built resorts thrown up in the 1960s, Avoriaz is one of the better designed – genuinely convenient, completely car free and visually striking rather than offensive. Morzine is a long established year-round resort, popular for its short airport transfer, traditional atmosphere and gentle wooded slopes. The village ambience tends to be quiet, but there is plenty of après ski action for those so inclined. We have 5 chalets in Morzine sleeping from 4 to 16 guests. Read more about skiing in Morzine.

Val d’Isere is one of the fabulous high mega-resorts, particularly (though not only) for experts. For a high Alpine resort, the town is attractive and very lively at night. For a combination of seriously impressive skiing and captivating village ambience, there aren’t many places we’d rather go. The charming, traditional neighbour of the better known Morzine, Les Gets is a wonderful resort with access to the massive Portes du Soleil ski area. The resort centre is a delightful mix of cobbled streets, piste side bars and traffic free retail therapy. A traditional dairy farming village at heart and a community that dates back to the 12th century, most buildings conform to the “chocolate box” vision of an Alpine ski resort. Arc 1950 is a high altitude, snow sure resort with a village feel and a good selection of cafes, restaurants, bars and shops. With its snowy pedestrianised streets you can literally ski right into the heart of the village. It offers an ideal base for beginners and experts alike to explore Les Arcs and the wider Paradiski area.
It’s tricky to pick the ‘best family ski resort’ as we understand children differ, parents differ, and the requirements of both change over time, especially as the children get older and become more competent skiers, however we have come up with a list to make deciding a little easier.
