At the turn of the 20th century Verbier was little more than a few farmer’s huts and cattle pastures. In 1925 a group of keen farmers hiked up from the valley bottom to ski back down again and unbeknown to them at the time, the seeds of global ski phenomenon were sown.  Lying in a wide sunny bowl above the Rhone Valley at the crossroads of Europe, Verbier has managed to retain plenty of Alpine charm to complement the razzle-dazzle and cosmopolitan chic.  The village itself is an attractive collection of traditional and modern chalets, stylish shops and world leading restaurants, bars and night clubs. Famed for its après-ski, the village embraces all; from big beers and table dancing at the Farinet, mouth-watering hot chocolate at Offshore and every opportunity to melt your wallet until dawn at Coco.

Glitterati and royal patronage aside, Verbier has earned its reputation through some outstanding skiing. Intermediates and experts will appreciate it the most, with some of the best and most easily accessible off-piste and ‘semi’ off-piste opportunities in Europe. Tortin, Mont Fort, Stairway to Heaven, Rock Garden … evocative names to stir emotion and challenge the spirit. Verbier sits at 1500m and the skiing stretches up to the Mont Fort at 3300 meters, effortlessly reached via one of the largest cable cars in Switzerland, guaranteeing snow throughout the season.

Great skiers need to start somewhere, and Verbier nurtures its young and inexperienced in the heart of the village on the nursery slopes of Les Esserts before progressing to the open, tree-lined runs of Savoleyres and later, the wide open slopes of the glacier.

Catered Chalets
in Verbier

Verbier offers some great activities for both the non-skier and those wanting an alternative to a day on the mountain. Our resort staff will have further details and would be able to assist you in booking.

Ice skating

Verbier sports centre not only has a 60m ice rink, but also a curling rink with three lanes. Skates are available to hire and you can take lessons if you wish.

There are regular ice hockey events, which are always a good night out. The local team is HC Verbier, also known as 'The Dolphins'.

Glacier walking

For a truly unique experience, clamp on your crampons and go hiking on Verbier’s Mont Fort glacier. It can be accessed by a little train that runs from the top of the Attelas cable car to the lift station at Mont Fort. The peak can be reached on foot but the slope on which the glacier lies is pretty steep so, unless you are planning on skiing or snowboarding back down, the recommended descent is via the cable car. The breathtaking views and spectacular crevasses make this an incredible experience.  We strongly recommend hiring a mountain guide for this activity.

Husky sledding

Be in charge of your own sled and team of excitable husky dogs, driving them along forest paths. After a brief explanation of how to make your team stop and start and strict instructions, you set off following the guide’s team. The next hour is a breathless scramble to keep the sled upright, trying to control the speed downhill, and hanging on for dear life when you tear around corners. Going uphill you have to help push the sled, so this is hard physical work.

If this all sounds a bit much you can opt for a less physical outing where you sit in the sled and the guide does all the hard work. Either way it is an exhilarating experience.

Winter walking trails

For non-skiers who don't want to miss out on the beauty of the Swiss mountains, Verbier has 25km of signed hiking trails, many of which are open all year round. Starting in resort they offer an alternative and peaceful way to enjoy the stunning alpine scenery. You do not need any particular equipment, just a pair of sturdy boots and layers of warm clothing that you can take off or put on as necessary. A pair of walking poles will come in handy for extra balance on icy patches and for checking snow depth.

Helicopter tours & Heli-skiing

Sit back and admire the mountains from the sky.  There are mountiain guide and local flight companies that offer panoramic flights via helicopter (weather depending) over the mountains and glaciers.
Skiers, snowboarders and telemarkers can take a helicopter ride into the very heart of the Swiss Alps and enjoy an original and challenging descent on one of Verbier's fantastic slopes. Under the supervision of a qualified guide and with pair of wide skis, these trips become accessible to everyone. Don't get too despondent if you don't go when planned though as helicopter travel is dictated largely by the weather. Heliskiing isn't legal in neighbouring France, so a lot of people will cross the border to have a go.

Ice climbing

Although it sounds like a very specialised sport, ice climbing is suitable for everyone - from complete beginners to experienced climbers. Some knowledge of ropes and basic climbing skills will give you a head start, but if you are a complete novice then your guide should be able to teach you from scratch.p>

Indoor and outdoor pool

Indoor (12 x 25 m) and outdoor pools, both heated, play area for children, beach volleyball, sauna, Turkish bath, solarium, tennis, squash, indoor ice rink (30 x 60 m), climbing wall.

Pool pass: CH 8.00/adult and CHF 6.00/child.
Pool pass with sauna and Turkish bath: CHF 16.00/adult and CHF 12.00/child.

Cross country skiing

Get back to nature and explore tranquil cross-country trails at your own pace.  For those used to downhill skis, at first you feel precariously balanced and downhill sections are definitely more exciting on narrow skis with no edges! The skis are lighter and slimmer than downhill skis and the boots are much softer and more comfortable. The tranquility of cross country skiing is perfect for anyone who enjoys peace and quiet.

Paragliding

The Valley de Bagnes is a wonderful and world famous spot to free fly. Glide down to the bottom of the valley on a tandem paraglider controlled by the instructor. The instructor will manoeuvre the parachute while the passenger enjoys the ride and fantastic views.
