The high-altitude resort of Alpe d'Huez is part of the Grandes Rousses massif, with neighbouring villages Auris-en-Oisans, Huez-en-Oisans, Oz-en-Oisans, Vaujany and Villard Reculas.
The highest point of the massif is the Pic Blanc at 3,330m. On a clear day from this vantage point you can see nearly a fifth of all French territory from the Italian border to the Central Massif mountains. 860 snow making machines cover 72km of the 237km of skiing. The area is also home to the longest ski run in the world, the 16km Sarenne which takes about 1½ hours to ski.
Alpe d'Huez boasts glacier skiing on the Sarenne Glacier. The glacier is accessed by both an extension of the Marmottes gondola and by the Pic Blanc cable car. Less confident skiers return to mid-mountain from the glacier by lift. But for those with more experience, the challenging Tunnel Run down the front face or the infamous 16km Sarenne run will both take skiers back down to join the rest of the lift system.
Rated as an excellent resort for all levels of skier and boarders there are 38 green slopes and 31 blue as well as two protected areas for beginners. Intermediates have 33 red slopes to choose from and can also enjoy night skiing on the floodlit slope and a beginner snowpark. There are 16 black runs, a boardercross, a snowpark specifically for experienced freestyle skiers and more than 20 high altitude off-piste trails.
This really is a resort with something to offer everyone.
